O Governo português manifestou no dia 9 do corrente o seu apoio à candidatura do Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas Ban Ki-Moon a um segundo mandato na ONU, através do seguinte comunicado à imprensa:
O Governo português congratula-se com o anúncio da recandidatura do Secretário-Geral Ban Ki-Moon e já manifestou o seu apoio à sua reeleição para um segundo mandato como Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas. Este anúncio é uma boa notícia para Portugal, para as Nações Unidas e para a Comunidade Internacional. Num contexto internacional complexo e em profunda mudança, a liderança de Ban Ki-Moon à frente das Nações Unidas tem sido firme e determinada, na procura de soluções equilibradas para a manutenção da paz e segurança internacionais. Tem também liderado um importante processo de reformas internas nas Nações Unidas, que visam aumentar a eficiência e relevância internacional desta Organização. O Governo português tem mantido uma relação de confiança mútua e uma cooperação exemplar com Ban Ki-Moon, que se intensificou este ano com o início do mandato de Portugal como membro não permanente no Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas. O Governo português está convicto de que a recondução de Ban Ki-Moon irá contribuir para um reforço do papel central das Nações Unidas e do multilateralismo no contexto internacional.

The Government of Portugal is pleased with the candidature announcement of Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and has already made public its support toward his election to a second term as Secretary-General of the United Nations. The announcement is good news for Portugal, for the UN and for the International Community. Within a profoundly changing and complex international context, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon’s leadership of the United Nations has been firm and determined in seeking balanced solutions for peace and international security. He has also headed an important process of internal reform within the United Nations, guided at strengthening the efficiency and the international relevance of the Organization. The Government of Portugal’s exemplary mutual trust and cooperation maintained with Mr. Ban Ki-Moon grew stronger in the current year with the beginning of Portugal’s mandate as a non permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations. The Government of Portugal is convinced that Mr. Ban Ki-Moon’s re-election will lead to the strengthening of the central role played by the United Nations and multilateralism internationally.
